Santa Cookies – Advent Chocolate Treats

Santa CookieMy local supermarket was selling off chocolate Advent calendars super cheap.  I’m partial to Lego or other gift calendars, but these chocolate ones were being knocked out at a price that made the chocolate in them cheaper to buy per ounce than the chocolate chips I’d gone in for.

It seemed rude not to pick some up to make something festive with.  The obvious, easy plan would be just to pop them on top of cupcakes, but as I had promised chocolate chip cookies to my chocolate eater it seemed rude not to deliver.  I opted for festive Santa cookies instead.

I’ll give you the basic cookie recipe I used, but you could use any I suppose.  I think next time I’ll try them with peanut butter cookies rather than these vanilla ones, but feel free to experiment and let me know how you get on.

  • Yield: 24 cookies (unless you eat one of the chocolates before putting it on a cookie, in which case you’ll get 23)

Snowman CookieSanta Cookie Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup butter – at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 large free range egg
  • 2tsp Madagascan vanilla extract (other vanilla will work, but Madagascan vanilla is heavenly)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 and 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 24 little Advent chocolates, Freddo Faces or similar

  • Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5
  • Beat the butter and sugars until fluffy – I use a stick blender, but you can do it by hand
  • Add the egg and vanilla and blend in
  • Add the salt, soda and flour and mix together to form a sticky dough
  • Divide into 24 balls and put them on cookie sheets – they won’t be perfect balls, and do leave space for them to spread.  I use about three cookie sheets for this
  • Squash each cookie ball down a bit with one advent chocolate, leaving it in the center
  • Bake for ten minutes
  • Take out of the oven and leave for five minutes to firm up a bit
  • Use a fish slice to carefully transfer each cookie onto a wire rack to cool

We went ahead and scoffed the lot, but if you have some will power then try saving your Advent chocolate for Christmas Eve, as I’m sure Santa would be delighted if you left out a Santa chocolate cookie for him overnight.  The chocolates I had did have a reindeer and an elf, but the reindeer looked a lot more like a sheep than Rudolph.
